Armstrong led a private life away from the public eye. He was a dedicated family man, raising his sons Rick and Mark Armstrong with his wife Janet. However, after 38 years of marriage, Armstrong and Janet divorced. He later remarried Carol Held Knight (4).

Armstrong passed away in 2012 due to complications from cardiovascular procedures (5). His death marked the end of an era, but his legacy continues to inspire countless individuals around the world.
